Project 3.2 Viewpoint

To take these images at different focal lengths 18mm and 93.2mm whilst maintaining the same viewpoint has resulted in the following effects:

  • There is a distortion of the perspective in the 18mm focal length image, the fence looks stretched in comparison to the first image. I would feel that I had a lot further to walk along the path to my home than if I looked at the left hand image! The angle of view along the edge of the fence is also distorted by perspective view.
  • In the right hand image (93.2mm focal length) you can see more of the surroundings which provides some context for the image of the fence along a path. Using the zoom on a lens can allow the photographer to limit what the viewer of the image can see, thus obscuring important information for construction of meaning to be gained from the image!
